Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I work for a cash for gold business. We are required to take all good home with us at the end of the day and ship it out the following day. On Fridays, if we work a Saturday shift, we hold the gold until they can be shipped together on Monday. Recently, my boss has taken an interest in my attendance and says I have the worst attendance and that I call off "sick" too much. Basically implying I am a liar. Then a day later I get a call saying that I have gold missing from my packages. Not only one package but 2. They didn't bother seeing if it got removed through shipping and to be honest I can't prove they got it but I believe they did and now they want me to pay back the amount they paid for it plus what profit they might have made off of it which is more than double what they paid. What do I do? I think they're trying to get me to quit. They never ran investigation on me or anything.

To be blunt, they sound like a-holes, and if they have no accountability protocols like a receipt system (you sign a receipt for what you get, etc. or what someone gives you) then you may be working for bad people. Think about the total situation. They could be making these claims just so they can turn around and claim some insurance losses. If it smells, get out. Otherwise, you can ask them ro prove it but in Illinois you can quit anytime or they can fire you anytime, for any or no reason, unless there's a work contract or union collective bargaining agreement.
