Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
My apartment was broken into. Nothing was taken. This III s a common accurence at this complex. I am very scared to stay here. The landlord has not repaired my door yet. They did call to tell me that i would be responsible for the repairs though. Is there anyway i can get out of my lease.

If this is a common occurrence, there may be a way for you to break your lease. Normally a landlord is responsible for repairs that the tenant did not cause, but you need someone to look at your lease. Illinois does have a Residential Tenant Right to Repair Act that you may be able to use to force the landlord to make the repairs or to move out once the lease is reviewed. And if it is a common occurrence the landlord may be responsible for the repairs because it knew or should have known its security features were not adequate, and if the place is insecure Illinois does recognize what is called a "constructive eviction" which is where a place is so deficient in one respect or another that the tenant can consider itself "evicted" but this requires moving out after notice to the landlord that could still invite a lawsuit for rent, and I would not do this without an attorney's help. But being broken into is definitely un-nerving. Best of luck.
