Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
I know a couple who signs a contract to rent a home. They break up before they move in to the house and tell the renter they wont be moving in. They offer to make payments so the renter can find someone new to rent the home. Are they legally obligated for the whole contract since they didn't move in

Probably, but the landlord has a duty to mitigate the damages by trying to find a new tenant. Without knowing more about the facts of the case, this advice is just general and may not be applicable to your situation.
I agree w/ Chen. Also, they should be looking at the lease to see what it says about assigning and subleasing: they may also be able to advertise the place and find someone to replace them. Then, if the landlord refuses to accept the assignee/sublessee, they may have an additional right to stop payments.
