Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Deadbeat Roommate

In July, my girlfriend and I co-signed a 12-month lease on a townhome. Just over a week later, she broke up with me. She is still living here with me and her three kids. The only things she is willing to pay are the phone and electric bills. She refuses to move out, and refuses to pay for a larger share of the expenses. I want her out, but she won't leave because she feels she doesn't have to leave because her name is on the lease. Leaving is not an option for me as I fear she will not pay the rent and I will be held liable. The buyout portion of my lease is cost prohibitive. Do I have any other options?

Re: Deadbeat Roommate

Hello. Yes. You have an out. Take your ex-

girlfriend to Chancery Court. You need equitable

relief. This is an effective procedure, but it

could take a while. If you have any questions,

I will be happy to answer them.
