Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
eviction
On 10-20-03 I paid my rent.It will be due again on 11-20-03. On 11-1-03 I received a message on my answering machine that I had 30 days to leave my dwelling. Later that evening the landlord personally told me that the reason I was told to leave was because I called the animal welfare department on him for not feeding his livestock, which I didn't do. I believe the reason for his eviction notice was because I called the Sheriff on his partner for harassment, he cut my television and phone line. The landlord threatened to shut off my water and electric to force me to move. The water company will not put the bill in my name. The electic will for $275.00. I'm willing to pay rent and my children and I can't afford to move right now. What can I do to stay? I will be able to afford to move by 1-1-04.

Re: eviction
He will need to take you to court to have you evicted. You can explain to the judge your situation and he may give you time to find another place to live. Your landlord cannot shut off your water and electric - keep paying your rent - and you can report him if he does do that - another way is to get an injunction to stop him from doing that. Either way, know that he cannot come in and just kick you out. It is against the law until he goes through the courts.
