Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
My friend is a tenant in IL who rented month-to-month a furnished home shared by one other tenant, each having their own private room and sharing the kitchen, bathroom and general living area. He's been renting there for 6 months, now.
His work hours were cut, so he got behind on rent, but had a verbal agreement wit the landlord to pay what he could until his hours increased and/or his income tax refund was received. There were issues regarding inadequate heating, sewer plumbing problems and co-tenant actions that he brought to the landlord's attention, but nothing was done and he just lived quietly and respectfully with those issues.
However, when the other tenant moved out, the landlord began pressuring him for more rent money... then posting a 5-day notice to pay or quit last week. She now changed the deadlock, locking him out and with his possessions inside, telling him she'd only let him in to get his things to move out. Suggestions please.

He will most likely have to sue for wrongful eviction (a reverse eviction) to get his things back, but the threat of a lawsuit may be enough. Landlords in Illinois generally do NOT have liens against tenant property for unpaid rent.
