Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
My grandmother in law (my husband's grandmother) owns a two flat. She lives on the first floor, and we live on the 2nd and we pay her rent. She has decided to sell the building. We don't have a formal rent agreement - do we have any rights as far as being able to stay in the building a bit longer after she sells? Can she have a cleaning crew come in and throw out anything she feels isn't up to snuff for a showing?

It would depend on the terms of your lease. If you do not have a written lease agreement, and you pay monthly, should could give you a thirty day notice, and you would be required to vacate at the end of the next rental period. For example, if your rent is due on the first of the month, and she gives you notice on any day up to and including January 31, you would need to vacate by February 28. No, she cannot lawfully dispose of your personal property without your consent.
