Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
Hotel Guest Privacy Rights
Recently I was staying for a period of 5 nights at a high end hotel. On night #3 we returned to our room to find that our key wouldn't work. They had a ''high roller'' that had come into the hotel that requested he stay in his usual room (which happened to be where we were.) They put all of our belongings into garbage bags and moved all of our stuff into a different room and dropped the bags just inside the door. Do they have the right to do this? What should be the remedy? The hotel was in Louisville, KY

Re: Hotel Guest Privacy Rights
It would seem to me that while this situation was not handled well by the management, it wouldn't be against the law. Hotels have the discretion to move guests to other rooms for pretty much any reason. If they moved you to a smaller room or one that wasn't as nice and yet still charged you the same rate, you might have a legitimate gripe with the hotel, OR if your belongings were damaged/missing, but otherwise, it's really just an inconvenience factor with which you dealt.
