Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Who does the house belong to?

My grandmother and my mother purchased a house together. My grandmother wanted to purchase the house after my grandfather died. She needed to put another name on the paper so she told me that my name was put on there. Then about eight years later my married someone. House was purchased in1971. My mother married in 1978. Then my grandmother died in 1993. My mother died suddenly in 2000. My mothers husband knew that the house was suppose to go to me. I am the one handling the tenants and everything that has to do with the house. Now I am tired of being a landlord because the tenants won't pay the rent like they should and other problems with them. I want to sell the house. So I want to know do I have the right to sell the house since I don't know where that paper is? I tried to contact the place where my grandmother did the house transactions but my letter came back. I feel that the tenants were friends of me and my family they are taking advantage of my kindness and I feel that they would pay someone that they did not know better than myself. Please can you let me know something. Thank you, lady268

Re: Who does the house belong to?

Go to the County where you live in to the Recorder of Deeds office and find out whose name is on title - if your name is on title then you have the right to sell the home.
