Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
My husband and I rented a property 2 1/2 weeks ago and the landlord said it has central air. We moved in on march 16 and I called him the 18 and told him about it. On April 2 he had a repair guy come and he said that it would be cheaper to put in a new unit. Does my landlord have to pay and put in a new one since he just said that it came with central air?

If the lease says it comes with central air and the lease says the landlord provides it and is supposed to take care of it, the landlord should replace it. Even if the lease says you are responsible for ordinary care and maintenance, if it is dead that would be the landlord's responsibility unless the lease says it's yours. If the lease is silent on it, it would normally still be the same result: landlord responsible for basic unit functionality, tenant responsible for ordinary care and maintenance. If you want to be sure, have a local attorney review the lease.
