Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Illinois Tenant with Maintence Issues

I live in Decatur, Illinois and I am wondering if it is legal for the maintence men to enter my apartment without notice, knocking or ringing the doorbell...is this considered breaking and entering? They come at all hours of the day, without any written or verbal notice. Is there anything I can do to stop this other than making sure I stay home 24/7 to make sure people aren't helping themselves to my things?

Re: Illinois Tenant with Maintence Issues

In most places, landlords are required to give at least two days' notice that they or their agents are going to enter your apartment. You need to check your local ordinances to see what applies to landlord/tenant (if there is nothing, look up the Illinois laws on this -- 765 ILCS 705 and the ones that follow), and send a letter to your landlord citing the relevant law and requesting that this practice cease immediately. You are entitled to safety and security in your home.
