Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
Hi I had an incident happen at a place I was living. I ended up going to jail for one year and was evicted while I was in jail. I don't owe the landlord any money at all. My mother informrd the landlord she will come and get my things but the landlord threw my things out in the streets without notifying my mother who was listed as my emergency contact.. Can I sue for my things that were lost.
1 Answer from Attorneys
The information is a bit confusing but the landlord had an obligation to keep your things safe unless you abandoned them, and it's impossible to say from this whether the landlord considered them abandoned. The Chicago Residential Landlord & Tenant Ordinance provides some protection for you, but you really need to sit with an attorney and go over everything for a reliable answer to be given to you.
