Can I kick my roommate out or move out of our apartment myself without legal reprocutions if my roommate starts using herion ?

Is there a lease and if it is in writing, who signed it. If it is not in writing, do you split the rent by each paying with a check 50/50, or cash, and either way if you get rent receipts in whose name are they? This is very important information.
