Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Land lord changed locks

My husband and I rented a house and the land lord never had us sign a contract. Then he passed away. Now the property is owned by his son who lives a couple of states over and he has a manager in the area that takes care of his properties. My husband and I decided to move out, during our move the manager came and changed the locks on the doors and left us a note saying we have to get current on our rent in order to get the rest of our belongings. Is this legal? We can not afford a legal battle... What can I do about this?

Re: Land lord changed locks

no its not legal. Change the locks back and remove your property. He can sue you for back rent and any damage you cause.
