Insufficient facts. But according to state law and Chicago ordinances you may qualify for double your money back if the property qualifies, the lease ended, the landlord did not follow the law and did not document any repairs within the required period of time after the lease ended. You need to identify how many other rental units were in this building, when the lease was up, whether the landlord gave you any notice of repairs (when did this happen, how much was claimed, etc.), if it was more or less than the security deposit (you may also qualify for interest on security deposit again depending how many units in the building), what kind of documentation did the landlord give you to verify the costs, and whether after all of the repairs were made whether the landlord was left with any balance. PS if it was MORE than your security deposit, please note the landlord COULD come after you for the rest. 5 years may be no defense unless there was a separate lease every year and the landlord failed through proper language to preserve its right to claim damages for the prior year.
