Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
Are the landlords allowed to raise the rent when you've done all the work to mak
We rented a loft of a sort, from our sister's former business partner. They are going through legal entanglements and we are not a part of them. However, my question is, When we rented the place there were holes in the wall you could walk through, no gas line for a stove. We repaired everything and even had the gas line installed for the stove. Is it right for the landlord to stick a note on the door stating that, as of such and such a date your rent will be raised?? What are my rights since we've made more repairs to the place than the landlord, who made none. I feel that since we'd made the improvements to the building and not just so that we could live there that there may be some recourse we may take..if so, what might they be?

Your repairs you could deduct from the rent you gave. However, a landlord has a right to raise the rent. That is why written leases are important because it gives you security for a definite period of time. Just because you chose to fix things does not mean he has no right to raise the rent.
