Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
My lease does not mention anything about subletting. I have been unemployed for a year and cannot afford to pay my portion of the rent. I co-sign the lease with 2 other girls. I found male student to take over my portion of the lease. One of my roommates doesn't want to live with a male so my landlord refuses to let me sublet to him. we live in Chicago. What can I do? Thanks for your time.

If you are covered by the Chicago Residential Landlord & Tenant Ordinance, the landlord has to be reasonable. While there have been t.v. shows about how co-ed apartments can function, your landlord may not want to be party to a situation where there could be a situation where he or she is then accused of allowing the sublet. Find another gal if you can, or explain your situation to the landlord and see if he or she is willing to help find the replacement - the Ordinance has some protections this way if your building is covered -- read about it at www.chicityclerk.com/tenantsVRSlandlords.php
