Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
I'm trying to get out of my lease a few months early and I've read that by law the the land lord must make reasonable attempts to re-rent the apartment. What actually constitutes reasonable attempts?

Ads, signs, listing it with a leasing agent, credit reports repainting or other cosmetic repair, cleaning the place, things like that -- anything you can think of to make it presentable, cover up your use of it, find someone else before the landlord would have had to do so.... Unfortunately these costs wind up being added to YOUR bill on top of lost rent if any. And right now if rents are declining in your area that could be something else you become liable for.
