Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

I Live in 2 two bedroom aparment alone and i recieved a letter on my door for a 10 day notice on 12/10/2009 stating that i have too many people living with me. when i went to the office the lease contsultant said that the neighbors have complined on me but i work from 4:30-1:30 am. whan i asked any neigbors if i distrubed them i was infomred not at all. I was basically informed that they will come into my unit at anytime to inspect as they wish and i should limit my company. i my opinon this is a violation of my right as a tenant especaily due to the fact that i pay them 1000 per month and they get their rent on time. that did bother me but i didn't argue. Then I went home on my Lunch break Today 12/22/09 and found a notice on my door that they found thrash in the hallway and the next time they find it i will be cahrged 25 per item. fist, we have 6 units in 1 hallway how can it be assumed that it is my trash when i am never at home, also i asked the neighbors if they recieved the same notice and i was informed that they did not get the notice. I am starting to feel harrased and discrimaianted against. what's the first steps that i can take to protect my rights?

To answer the question you posed in your final sentence take your lease and any building rules to an attorney. There are limits to how many people who are not related can occupy any kind of housing under what are called local "zoning" laws. As to guests there are occupancy limits, and noise is a matter of nuisance. If you or your guests have made too much of a racket the neighbors may already too far gone and could be making trouble for you. Immediately, you should write and deliver a letter to the management office (and get someone there to give you a receipt for the letter) that you did not put trash in the hall. Discrimination means you are being singled out for potentially illegal reasons; this too is something an attorney can help deal with. Good luck; this sounds like an aggravating experience.
