Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
I live in University of Illinois-owned apartments in Champaign, IL. I recently heard that landlords owning a certain amount of units have to pay tenants interest on their security deposits after a certain period of time has passed. Assuming the time and ownership requirements are satisfied, is university-owned housing subject to this law or is it somehow immune because it is owned by the government? The "landlord" has not been paying me any interest on my security deposit and I've lived here for almost 3 years.

You should google (765 ILCS 715/) Security Deposit Interest Act, "Public housing" is exempt from this act. I do not know if university owned housing would be considered "public housing", but if the rents are subsidized and below market, that's what they'd probably argue, especially if the current security deposit (if I remember correctly) is only $250.00. You may want to check with a local attorney on this.
