Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
I was living with my fiance in Addison Ill until about a month ago. We ended up getting into a large fight and I left to stay with a friend to let things cool down between us. We have come to the conclusion that things are beyond repair and that we should just part ways. I went over the other day to gather my belongings and the locks have been changed and she will not let me in. Can I just hire a locksmith to unlock the door so I can grab what is mine so we can move on with our lives or will this just complicate things? I don't want to make things any harder than they have to be or take her to court if that can be avoided at all.

If you are both named as tenants on the lease and there is no restraining order against you, you have every right to access your belongings.
