Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
Can I move out my apartment without paying one month rent and the landlord just keep my deposit instead?

NO.
The security deposit is for your land lord to use to fix any damage to the property.
The landlord will then refund the balance less any damages to the unit. You have the right to get an "accounting" of any of the deposit money used for this purpose.
Your lease probably says no as per the other answer but some people take the risk. You risk the landlod finding things wrong and suing you. If you've had a good relationship with the landlord you can ask but then it's up to the landlord and the risk can be the same. Whether you want to be up front would be up to you considering all factors but the risks are there. And if you are sued that will cost you more. So it is not recommended even if the risk the other way is that the landlord claims damages anyhow, but if your deposit is available to pay for them then there may be less chance the landlord would sue for a minor balance.
