Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Hi, I have a question regarding a deposit check.

This happened about year ago when I was still a student.

I was a treasurer of a school organization and had to rent a private place to hold an event. I made the actual payment and deposit amount to the facility.

When I got contacted back from the facility after the event was over, they told me that they were under an audit process and the state of Illinois took the possession of the deposit check and I have to contact the state personally to get the check sent to me.

Is this actually possible to happen?

It would be great if someone could answer this.

Thank you for your time

Sounds sketchy. Anything is possible -- like if they are not just under audit but investigation and their records were confiscated!?!?!?! Otherwise generally it takes a long time for funds paid to a private company to wind up in the hands of the State -- they effectively have to be deemed "unclaimed" and that usually takes several years. So I would press them on who and what agency of the "State" they are talking about. And if they can't, I'd suggest getting an attorney involved if the amount of the deposit is of any significance or you need some formal statement so that you are not in jeopardy for failing to get the money back.
