Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
hello, I have a question. my lease ends on 5-1-14, the landlord sold the building and the new owner wants me to sign a affidavit to move in 30 days, I didn't sign it yet. I have 2 children and I need time to save for a apartment and find one also. I lived here a year with no problems, but the new owner wants me out. 30 days is not enough time at all. I don't want to be evicted cause then I might have problems finding a apartment, what can I do? the new owner says eviction will give me only 10 days to move , please help me

You are entitled to 30 days notice under Chicago law. You don't need to sign anything and I don't see the benefit in doing so.
Your landlord is very mistaken if he thinks an eviction will only take 10 days. Evictions take 1.5-4 months, not that I recommend you overstay.
I agree with Mr. Brabender but I also agree with you that having to go to court and having your name on an eviction case doesn't help either. Unfortunately if you are on a month-to-month that is the way things work. It may help for you to have an attorney on your side who can help work something out with the landlord. If it's a matter of money, that can always be discussed; you may have to "buy" an extra month for higher rent....
