Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
how can i recoup money for repairs i paid for from a former landlord
1 Answer from Attorneys
Did you have a written agreement with the landlord for repayment? If not, then you may have a difficult time recouping the money. What was the nature of the repairs - electrical, heating, plumbing or decorative, cosmetic? If the former, rather than the latter, then you may have a better chance of recouping the money. You stated it involves a former landlord; how long ago was this your landlord and when/where did the repairs take place and was it during the lease? In any event, if the landlord refuses to pay, you would have to file a lawsuit for repayment under a theory of contract - written or oral. You should consult an attorney to review the facts and law.
