Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Rent

I moved into an apartment as a favor to my friend and said I would pay the rent because he bought a house. I moved out and I have never even seen or signed the lease. Am I responsible to still pay rent even though I did not sign but the landlord knew I was subleasing?

Re: Rent

You have no liability to the landlord unless you signed some specific lease directly with them. In a sublease situation, your "landlord" is the original tenant or your friend. He or she is the one who could enforce any agreement that the two of you had. If the lease was your friend and the Landlord, the landlord really has no legal relationship with you.
