Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

we have renters that have been in our 2 flat for about 3 weeks. They have not paid one penny towards rent or their utilities yet. They convienently are never home or answer their phone when we try to contact them. My aunt wants to move all their belongings out into the yard and change the locks when they are not home. How much trouble will I get into if I help her do this? What is the right way to go about getting these squatters out of 2 flat?

You need to serve them a five day notice and proceed with a lawful eviction thereafter. The Court website for your area might have forms too or you can hire a lawyer to help you. Good luck. Attorney Alex - 773-848-4444

They can sue you if you do that, especially if their stuff is damaged. What your aunt is suggesting is called a "forcible entry" which is prohibited in Illinois. They might even be able to call the police, and they will tell you the same thing even though it is not a criminal offense, because taking their stuff and jeopardizing it is.
