Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
I am renting the building that housed my retail store. On December 29th I received a phone call and then a certified or registered letter on the 31th stating that the building had been sold and I had until January 10th to vacate the premises or the landlord would begin eviction proceedings. Is this legal?

Yes it's possible depending on what the status of your lease or tenancy was. There is such a thing as a 10-day notice to quit, after which eviction proceedings can be commenced, if the landlord believes you have no further rights to occupy. But without reviewing whatever lease documentation you may have, it's really impossible to be certain. Don't give up -- you may be in a better position than you think if you have a valid lease and the owner who sold gave a "bill of goods" to the buyer who is now saddled with your tenancy.
