Our Roommate stole our rent money

We give our rent to one particular roommate and he sends the check to the landlord. This last month, he stole our rent, used it for the down payment on a new car, gave what was left back to us, and told us he wouldn't pay us back and wouldn't come up with his portion of the rent. He is also a recovering heroin addict and we think he may have relapsed again. Also, we all gave him cash for the rent and are all on one lease. Do we have any legal action against him?

Call the police and report the theft or sue him for conversion.
