about security deposit

i rented 1room in 3 bedroom townhouse with 6 months lease. After 6months we never renewed it but in contract it says after 6months �unless terminated, this will automatically renewed yearly�. but 3 months ago landlord made partition in living room and made room and rented it. Is it valid contract? Now I am planning to leave and he said I have to wait for my security deposit for 4 to 6 weeks. Is law? Do I have to wait this long? Can landlord rent single family townhouse to 4 different people? Need advice.

I would have to do more research about the automatic renewal but it does not sound right. Then it very much sounds illegal to take away part of the space which you were renting. And if you got to the end of your lease then you should not have to wait so much for return of the security deposit.
