Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

My sister and I rented an apartment and terminated our lease after one month because we had mold, roaches, etc. that were never taken care of. Our lease stated we were able to terminate the lease if they did not fix the problems. We have certified letters to show there was a problem along with there responses saying they would not fix the issues. The only thing we didn't do in accordance with the lease was pay for the month we were there which we tried to do but they refused to take the money saying we owed them ten thousand dollars(the remainder of the lease and then some). It is now on my credit and sent to collections which I did not find out about until I applied for a mortgage. What do I need to do to get this off my credit?

Can't tell if you properly terminated the lease, how they sent you to collections, whether you were served with any legal action, how it got on your credit (at what point - before collections, after?). Too many unknowns for an answer that would be helpful.
