Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
sorority house contract
My 19 year old daughter signed a one school year housing services contract to live in the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority house. After one semester, she hates it and wants to move out. The contract says if member moves out for any reason, a fee no less than $500 and no more than $2200 will be due. Living in this house is making her physically ill. Is there any recourse, as I cannot afford this fee and never saw this contract until now.

You should try to work with the university. I imagine that this happens quite often as freshmen figure out what living situations work or do not work. If money is an issue, an attorney will probably be outside of your price range, but the school should have someone who can help you work with the sorority. Remember that if your daughter is having a bad experience, the sorority wants to make sure that they do not look bad in front of the university or they may lose their charter or other benefits.

Re: sorority house contract
Hello. I note that you say that living in this house is making your daughter physically ill. If her illness is due to activities in the sorority which are out of control and unregulated by the college, then I believe you have a basis for arguing that the school breached the housing contract. It can be implied that the environment of the sorority would be supervised by the college to insure that students such as your daughter can study and thrive in a campus setting. Will be happy to discuss this in more detail. I suggests that any claim that the contract was breached by the college be in writing. You should not try to do this on your own. I suggests you obtain the assistance of an attorney.
