Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
Tenant law
I moved into an apartment during a transition from one owner to the next. The lease was the old one very basic IL one.It only mentions abandonment and adds an add-on that states ''you must keep the managers whenever you have a change in employment''.We have lived here and paid rent on time for over a year. When our lease was up in Oct.we told our managers that it would be likely that my husband would be tranferred to another state. They suggested for us to sign-up for their smallest availible lease 6 mo.They like us very much.I'm worried that since there is no mention of job transfers in the lease are we going to have our security deposit taken away?Is this legal? Also, this job transfer is not optional.I have kept the managers informed every step of the way since Oct.they want to help us as much they can but, since they suggested the 6 mo lease with the belief that it would help us.What do we have to expect? It also, does not help that alot of people have moved out recently.I talked w/one of the managers recently and she told me that this new owner wasn't like the old one and he's not very reasonable, and she would try to get our security deposit back.

Re: Tenant law
The manager can tell you whatever she wants, in Illinois, the security deposit is not rent. If the landlord does not return the security or give you proper notice of repairs being made then you can sue with some pretty hefty damages.
But if you do not pay for all 6 months of the lease or get a sublessor, then you can be sued too.
