Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

unsigned lease

I have recently signed a lease and was expecting to move in in two weeks. However the developer I ma renting the apartment from has not yet signed and returned a copy of the lease to me. It has been over 3 weeks since I submitted my signed copy to him. Is there a time limit in which he must sign the lease? Also, is tehre a way for me to get out of the lease if he does not sign it soon?

Re: unsigned lease

The time limit often depends on the situation, but yes. If you sign the lease and the other party does not, at some point in time ("reasonably" close to when you signed) your signature is no longer valid. The best thing for you to do, however, would be to contact the developer and say "I want the lease signed with 24 hours or I am going elsewhere." If you do not get a signed lease, give written notice that you are walking away and make sure to document the developer receiving it.
