Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

witholding property

I have a daughter that went to go an stay with a friend and now the friend is saying the had a verbal agreement and is witholding my daughters property for non-payment. Can that be done and what can we do to claim her property. My daughter did not have a job nor does she have one I can't understand how this person expected her to pay rent

Re: witholding property

Well, surely the friend is wrong legally...you can't have verbal agreements about real property issues. There are legal remedies to get property back but is the stuff in question here worth enough to proceed in a court setting? I'd think a call to the police might be the way to go. Is there a landlord? Some sort of campus arbitration option? I'm just thinking about different "pressure" points to keep this out of court...unless there's really valuable property at issue and then getting into court might be something to consider.
