Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Illinois

Alleged patient neglect leading to elopement and death of a pt by hanging.

Functionong under nursing duties I was interviewed by state police and gave statements but hold off in signing it because I did not have a lawyer to protect me at the the time I was given a short notice to be able to get a personally chosen lawyer to guide me what to say. Was that the smart thing to do or did it put me in a legal bind later in the investigation?
