Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Illinois

Can a lawyer sue me for costs and hours on a case that fell through? I know someone that had a malpractice case with someone and a class action lawsuit that may have affected it. The lawyer is angry and threatening to charge for his hours and costs he put in. The person is sure that the lawyer knew about the class action lawsuit and he claims he didnt have it in his notes. I am worried because this could ruin the person's life.

Let's set aside the class action thing for a moment because it's confusing -- not sure if you're writing for yourself or someone else. Anyhow, did you have any kind of engagement agreement with this attorney? If you that needs to be reviewed to determine if it is valid and what your liabilities are under it like any contract for professional personal services. If you had no engagement agreement (sounds like it but can't tell), there was still an arrangement of some kind since you seem to admit the lawyer did represent you for a period of time - you'd need to explain what your understanding of the arrangement was, and whether the lawyer is now trying to modify it without your consent. The Illinois ARDC can assist a bit, or you can try again once you have more information to share.
