Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Illinois

If someone gives you money.

I had a friend who gave me some money to help me out with some bills and he died in March of this year. His son is coming after me for the repay of the money to his estate. His son wants me to make monthly payments till i get the money paid back. I never signed any kind of agreement to pay back the money and he said if he died don't worry about paying it back. Am I reliable to repay the money back to his estate or is there something I can to do to fight it?

Re: If someone gives you money.

If you can prove your arrangement with the lender [that will be difficult if he is deceased] then you were the beneficiary of a conditional gift - one which became effective upon the death of the giver. One never has to repay a gift.
