Legal Question in Military Law in Illinois

OPSEC and PERSEC

I am a member of an online community and also in the military. On this online community, I have not disclosed my unit number, full name or unit location. I have posted my last name, the city I live in and a somewhat detailed description of my job. However in my job description I do not disclose any locations, unit numbers, military operations (past, present or future) or anything that I can think is sensitive. Is there any OPSEC or PERSEC violation there? Especially when considering that there are very detailed and specific job descriptions are available for public access on �.mil� websites, not to mention even policy and procedures for my job.

In the areas of OPSEC and PERSEC you always want to err on the side of giving less information. A skilled intelligence analyst could put together your location with your job description and a list of military activities in your area. Of course all of this is either more or less important depending on the military job you actually do. If it is classified or deals with classified information you may want to be more careful. It is difficult to determine whether you have committed a violation without knowing more, but again, it's better to share less information online rather than more.
