What are the consequences if a Marine
becomes a deserter in a time of war?

The death penalty is authorized in time of war, but we haven't seen one of those in many decades. Likely 6-12 months of jail time and a bad conduct discharge depending on the service and length of time the service member is gone.

Very serious. At least in theory, one could receive the death penalty for desertion in time of war. Certainly, life in prison would be a permissible punishment although probably not likely. However, it is very serious. Talk to a lawyer before taking any action that could subject you to any such punishment.
