Legal Question in Personal Injury in Illinois
What constitutes Defamation/Libel?
I work at a local grocery store and myself and a coworker have been having a bit of a disagreement lately. While I was away visiting Western Illinois University last weekend I called him from a dorm phone to sort it out, but he wouldn't talk. I had my cell phone calls forwarded to my friends phone, and my coworker started calling back and harassing my friend. Whenever my friend gave me the phone, it wouldn't be my coworker, but instead my coworkers friends, who would harass me.I told my friend that if they called back, I didn't want to talk and just dont answer the phone. About twenty minutes later I learned that my friend called the police because my coworker threatened him in a voicemail when he would not answer the phone. I had nothing to do with it, and didn't learn about it until after the fact.
Upon going to work 2 days later, I heard from other employees that my coworker was telling everyone that -I- called the police on him. And that he gave me a black eye for it. Basically, making everyone think a lot less of me, and more of him. Does this constitute libel? Is there any sort of legal action I can take? This has created a lot of problems for me at work. What legal action is available to me to protect my reputation?

Re: What constitutes Defamation/Libel?
It would be considered slander - however, to prosecute something like that can cost you. You might be better off having an attorney draft a letter to him outlining the fact that you are considering suing.
