Is it okay for me to contact the insurance company I'm suing to get an update since my lawyer will not communicate with me?

No. I suggest that you fire your lawyer as he or she is required to communicate with you on a regular basis or respond promptly within a couple of days if not sooner.

The insurer will probably decline to speak with you until you give them evidence that you have terminated your attorney.
