Legal Question in Personal Injury in Illinois

Private lake liability

our home is located on a private lake in lansing,il. We often have parties with guests who swim. The lake is deep, and we request that children must have either wear a life jacket or flotation device depending on how well they swim, In most cases the parents are supervising their swimming , are we liable if anything should happen? We provide flotation devices, life jackets, paddle boats, and require that chidren under 9 must have at least a life belt on when playing anywhere near the lake, even if they are not swimming. My father insists we are still liable, I would like to show him something in writing to put this matter to rest. thank you

Re: Private lake liability

While I cannot answer your question about liability because it requires too much detail, and goes both ways, meaning that generally you can be liable for not doing enough or even for doing enough incorrectly, the real practical answer to your question is to have as much liability insurance as possible. Your homeowner's policy has a small liability component (maybe $100,000.00) which you can increase (to a million or two) with an umbrella policy that you can buy from your agent.
