Legal Question in Personal Injury in Illinois

My son (29yrs) had a fight with a pit bull when it attacked his cat. He received hand injuries and reported it to police andwent to ER. The next morning he went back to ER to have his hand checked again and he had a lot of pain in his knee. The dr. then checked the knee also and said there was a fresh tear of the ACL. The dog owners insurance said they would not cover the knee because he did not report it to police the night it happened. My son missed a weeks work and was laid off, he has now filed for unemployment. If he has knee surgery he will not be eligible for UI. He also bought a house the week all of this started. His attorney told him to go ahead and have surgery and not pay any dr. bills and he would get the money for him. But how does my son pay his bills while all of this going on? Thank you, Randy P
