Addition to existing building

we live in a subdivision that has a covenant, the covenant states that we can have one single datached garage, not exceeding 2 1/2 stories high, any way we have a single story garage and are currently adding to it to make it a 2 story garage and our neighbors are trying to make us stop construction , are we in our legal rights to continue erecting the second story?

From what you have told us, you are within your rights. However, all the restrictive covenants should be reviewed carefully to ensure that they do not otherwise prohibit your garage addition.
