Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

Apartment Building Fire, No Renter's Insurance.

Hi,

I am in Illinois. There was a building fire in the apartment complex where i lived that was caused by a faulty stove to another tenant's apartment located below mine. The cause was determined by the fire dept and they were astounded that such old gas stoves still existed. Needless to say, i was the apartment located above the fire and I lost everything mainly to smoke and water damage. I had no renter's insurance. Because this fire was caused by a faulty and outdated gas stove, can I recover monitary damages or anything from the landlord. In addition, the stove in my apartment had dry/burn marks behind it that I had reported to him on one occasion. The landlord returned my security deposit promptly, but I have lost so much !! Thanks for any help you can provide me with. I greatly appreciate it.

If you can prove it was the faulty stove caused the fire and not tennant negligence , you could seek compensation from the building owners or management, if you could also prove they knew the stoves were unsafe.
