how do attorneys charge for a real estate tax protest

Most real estate tax attorneys in Illinois charge a contingent fee based on the tax savings achieved. Most attorneys do not make any charge if they are unsuccessful.
In some instances, or if a client requests, an attorney may charge an hourly fee.

And when you say tax "protest" that may be equivocal: are you trying to "object" to the proposed assessment, "protest" the tax rate, or something else. The rates charged may differ depending on the kind of relief you're seeking. So when you shop around, make sure you explain what it is you're trying to accomplish! Good luck.
