Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

My boyfriend and I were living together in my apartment. He one day left, 1 month ago, with only the clothes on his back. He left everything he owns here at my place. I have NO means to contact him - No phone, address, etc. The only thing I do know is he moved to another state. What can I do with his things? At any point is it safe for me to throw them away?

You need to at least give him a chance to retrieve his stuff before you throw them out. Try and contact any relatives you have have contact information for and if you still have his cell number try calling him. The rules seem to say you have to keep the property for 3-5 years. My suggestion is that if you are unsuccessful in getting in touch with him, turn over his stuff to the Bureau of Unclaimed Property (yes, there really is such a bureau), just do a google search to get in touch with the Bureau and unload his stuff onto them.
