Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

We are all being evicted

Is there anything we can do? Twenty or so of us have been given 30 days to move with no written notice and no financial compensation.. They are developing the property, so they are tearing all the houses down. It just seems to me that there should be some kind of relocation money distributed or something. Can you please give me some advice? Thank you! Oh and I should add that the landlords have already sold the properties to some big company.

Do you have written leases? The new owner is now your landlord, and has the same rights and duties as the previous owner. If there are no written leases, they are required to give you thirty days written notice of their intent to terminate the lease. The thirty days would start from the next date your rent is due. So, if they gave you notice today, you would have until the end of September. If they do not give you notice until September 5, for example, you would have until the end of October. Unless there is a written lease which allows for "relocation money" there is not obligation to provide any money to you.

30-day notice is required to be in writing. Is there a lease? If so, I would suggest that you to consult an attorney and have him/her review the lease.

If there is no lease that specifies "relocation money," the landlord has no obligation to provide you with such compensation.
