Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

In Illinois, I want to make insurance claims on some properties for an Hail incident that happened 4/9/14. I was told I was out of luck since IL law requires you make the claim with in a year of it happening. So it looks like just because I waited one week past one year, I'm out of luck? is that true?
